The California Commission on Realtime Reporting (CCRR)

Dear California Certified Shorthand Reporter:

The California Commission on Realtime Reporting is pleased to introduce the California Certified Realtime Reporter (CCRR), a certificate of realtime proficiency accessible to all California CSRs. CCRR is a realtime machine skills test designed to meet or exceed the proficiency levels promulgated by NCRA, but without the requirement of the RPR.

That means any reporter with a current California CSR certificate (or CSR equivalent recognized by the Court Reporters Board of California (CRB), or a CRR) is eligible to take the CCRR today! The CCRR has already qualified in Federal and Superior Courts around the state as a requisite certification for the highest pay premium offered for realtime proficiency. The CCRR provides a much needed statewide standard of realtime proficiency, which eliminates the need for expensive local testing of fluctuating/unknowable quality that creates artificial barriers to selecting and hiring competent, certified realtime writers.

The CCRR is designed by respected industry leaders who are experienced and skilled in the areas of reporter education, notably Ned Branch, Nancy Patterson and Irene Fontana, as well as a number of working reporters and providers of realtime services in depositions, court, CART, and captioning settings. After five years of research and development by Subject Matter Experts, the Commission has chosen testing criteria also utilized by NCRA and the CRB in designing their machine skills tests.

The Commission recognizes the importance of maintaining current professional standards and, therefore, encourages all CCRR holders to be a member of and participate in the California state professional association of their choice as well as NCRA. The Commission also supports the CRB's ongoing efforts to achieve continuing education requirements for all California CSRs.

Since the mandates of the Federal Americans with Disabilities Act and the Federal Telecommunication Act in the 1990’s, members of society are becoming increasingly reliant upon and are benefiting from realtime reporting services available in all aspects of their daily lives including the areas of television, web broadcasting, education, legal field, including the courts. These consumers can identify and rely upon the competency of realtime reporting providers, who have been tested and certified by the CCRR.
